Ready, Steady, Go..SLOW – The law of attraction and meditation

The law of attraction and meditation? What’s it all about?

The law of attraction and meditation, for anyone who studies these things, go hand in hand. One informs the other and vice versa. Although the law of attraction is a universal law that pervades all things and everything and everyone is subject to it, the act of meditation allows individuals to consciously interact with it, to hear its call, allowing the law of attraction to work in its most sublime and satisfying way possible, to bring about the changes they want in their life. Which means that if YOU practice the art of meditation, you too can leverage the power of the universe to have it work for you and your desires too. The law of attraction is working with you anyway, why not use it consciously to create the life you really want?

So read on and find out how this simple practice can transform your life because in this post, I am going to advocate the opposite of what many multi-millionaire motivational speakers have built their businesses on – which is taking ACTION – doing, getting out there, pounding the pavements to carve out your niche and be successful in the world.

Sounds like a lot of effort yes? Well it is! And you can become worn out from all the go-getting before you have even begun to discover why you are doing these things in the first place. You therefore become despondent, frustrated and ultimately this kind of action leads to many people giving up on their dreams and goals before they come to fruition in the false belief that what they are DOING is not working, or worse still, that they are just not supposed to achieve their goals.

Now don’t misunderstand me – I am not advocating a life of sloth either – how tedious that sounds, but I am advocating a method of sifting through the chaff to get to the wheat – some time for reflection before action so that you are sure that the actions you take will bring about the greatest benefit and leverage the energy of the universe towards manifesting your ultimate goals.

I don’t know about you but my life can get rather hectic: I love what I do and can’t wait to get up to my computer every morning and I’m still on it late at night, checking in, writing my blogs, replying to comments, updating social media, checking out new information and training, answering emails…..the list is endless.

I absolutely LOVE what this lifestyle and choice has given me and I’m so grateful that I have found a place where I can really be myself, write about the things I love and get to interact with the world!

I get so fired up and inspired to that I sometimes forget to eat, drink and sleep! I have made some wonderful friends in the process and enjoy checking in with them to learn of their successes and progress and I find my motivation is sky-high at the moment. But I also occasionally feel that this is a race that I’ve now signed up to and there’s a fear of stopping to take a breath, in case I end up getting behind.

And that’s just my work. If I add to the list the things I need to do to keep my house in order; my children in school, fed and active; and my other commitments up to date, then life starts to look like there’s never enough time. I get stressed, I try to do more and the whole thing feels like I’m on a hamster wheel.

Hamster wheelSo why write a post suggesting we ‘slow down’ and meditate?

It’s because I believe that meditation is the best thing we can do in any given circumstance and we all need to stop over-thinking things once in a while and instead, allow the mind to FOCUS INWARDLY: to quiet your mind and ensure that all the motivated, pumped-up actions we’re taking are those that will propel us further down the road, rather than have us carve out a small (large) rut in the road and we all end up going nowhere! Worse still, we turn around and head in the opposite direction of our dreams.

Sometimes the ‘fear of being left behind’ attitude means we get too caught up in the excitement-bandwagon of life and before we know it, we’re off down a path we don’t really want to go that is taking up more time than it’s worth, leading only to a dead end!

Think of it like this – there is a massive difference between REQUIRED ACTION (the things you really feel you should do day to day) and INSPIRED ACTION – those things that you are inwardly driven to do, that you simply cannot ‘not do (excuse the double negative please), and which will bring you the greatest benefit.

What are the should do things in your life?

If you are anything like me, they consist of something like:

  • tidy the house
  • do the washing
  • clean the bathroom
  • make dinner
  • take the kids to school and then pick them up
  • go to my day job
  • cut the grass
  • organise a family social……etc, etc, etc!

But the things that I’m INSPIRED to do are rather different:

They consist of things like:

  • write a new post for my website
  • begin writing my ebook
  • finish writing my play

So which do I do first? There’s the dilemma – that’s where meditation can help.
You see, if I take the time to meditate, in my quietened state, far away from the adrenaline-driven, power-house world of constantly pushing myself to go forward, I could actually find that my ‘inspired action’ for the day is none of the above at all. It might be simply to take a walk, which then could lead me to receiving a wonderful inspiration for my book or blog; or I may find I’m being motivated to sort out that pile of papers in the corner leading me to locate that vital piece of correspondence I’ve been searching for all week, reducing my overall stress; or a could just find myself having a well-deserved rest which rejuvenates my body and lightens my soul warding off a potential illness.

Who knows? I definitely don’t. And what’s more important – I won’t know until I take the time out to listen.

So how do you meditate?

The great news is that anyone can meditate. You don’t have to be a Yogi; you definitely don’t need to be able to contort your body to keep your leg behind your head in order to get the benefits of quietening your mind.

The main thing is that you give yourself permission and allow yourself some time out.

Let me say that again:

Give yourself permission and allow yourself some time out!

Many of us find that almost impossible because we are so caught up in the action-oriented world that we find it difficult to break out of the hamster wheel! There’s an old adage that goes something like:

“If you don’t have time to meditate for an hour, you need to meditate for 2!”

I’m not sure of the origin of this phrase – some attribute it to Gandhi, others to Buddhism and others to even older spiritual beliefs. The origin is not important but the essence behind it is. That being, if you don’t think you have time to meditate, then you really do need to find the time, because you have got yourself into the mindset of required-action-orientation rather than inspired-action-orientation. And ultimately, this will lead to you running around in circles, achieving less and less and complaining about not having enough time, more and more. You will eventually burn out!

How to meditate

1. Find a comfortable position, sit down or lie down quietly and close your eyes. Set an alarm for 15-20 minutes. You can build up to longer if you wish, but this would be a good starting time limit.

2. Focus on your breath, taking deep breaths in and out for a few minutes. If you can hold your breath for a few seconds before exhaling then that’s good, but don’t stress if you can’t. Take a series of deep breaths and let you body and mind become still.

3. Allow any thoughts to drift in and out of your mind without any judgment. Just notice them float in an out like clouds in the sky. Do not attach any emotions to them such as fear, anxiety or stress. Just observe without judgment. One thing I used to do when thoughts came into my head that I knew I wanted to deal with later, was to imagine a series of pegs like those in a primary school. I then imagined pegging the ‘thought’s onto the pegs to come back to later.

4. Eventually your mind will slow down and you will reach a peaceful, meditative state where you should feel calm, clarity and peace. Then you can listen to the thoughts and feelings that come from your inner being – these will be the guiding lights and inspirations that will help you through your day.

Other options you could consider:

  1. Some people like to listen to calming music or use a guided meditation such as a self-hypnosis tape to help them relax. I use both on different occasions but I also like to sit quietly and just listen to the silence too.
  2. Meditating in nature is a great way to calm yourself and connect to your source – just make sure you are warm enough so that the body’s need for warmth does not overshadow your meditation.
  3. Joining a local yoga class or following an online yoga program or course may help some people too. I personally love yoga as I enjoy the physical as well as the spiritual aspects of it.
  4. Affirmations can help if you want to focus on a particular subject once you get the hang of meditating. Have a look at some of the affirmations for happiness or relationships that I have suggested on the site too.

The main thing is to find a way of meditating or quietening your mind that suits YOU. Otherwise, you will be back in the ‘should do this’ mode and you will not benefit from the meditations.

Start NOW!

Whatever you do, start now – today! Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you don’t have time: You do.

You are in control.

It is YOUR LIFE.

Take charge of it.

Dare yourself to be different and become the person you were meant to be – to stand out from the crowd, not follow it!

So today, I’m going to follow my own advice. I’m going to take a step back, quieten my mind and meditate. I intend to focus on discovering the things that I’m inspired to do that I know will really help achieve my goals in the long term.

I don’t know what that will be but I’m very excited to find out.
And remember – I’m not saying “don’t take action”. That would be a misunderstanding because action is necessary to move us forward and in this physical world in which we live. Action and interaction with others is necessary to bring about change. However, I am advocating taking the time to work out what is the best action to take in any given circumstance, so that I can listen to my own intuition (inner being, higher self, or whatever you want to call it) which I believe will lead me in the right direction.

Can you give yourself some time today to do the same?

Why not write in the comments box below and let me know what you discover?

Love and light

Gail

    • Hi Aladin. One thing I would recommend to help you is just to keep practising. It does get easier the more you do it but I agree, at first, it can seem difficult to actually forget all the thoughts that you are used to having swirling round in your head. The more you do it, the easier it gets and you really will feel better if you give yourself time to do this. Thank you for your comment and come back anytime. Gail

  1. Hi Gail – Thank you for this post! I am trying so hard to carve some time out each day to meditate. Does it count to practice meditation right before bed before dosing off to sleep? Or is it more beneficial to practice meditation during a time when your not about to doze off to go to sleep for the night, so it’s more intentional? I’d love your insight on that.

    • Hi Theresa. Thanks for reading and commenting on the article. I’m glad you are trying to find time to meditate. In answer to your question, either time is good but I think the intentions may be quite different depending on the time of day. I like to meditate at the start of the day to get myself into a good place for the day, setting my intentions and working out what’s going to be the most productive thing for that day. At night time, I always do some meditating just before I go to sleep as I find it incredibly relaxing and it makes for a great night’s sleep. However, my intentions at bedtime are usually more oriented towards gratitude for the day I’ve had, general appreciation for where I am and setting up for the next day. In terms of law of attraction, it is important to set up for the day with some good thoughts to put you in a joyful place; and also, to show appreciation at the end of the day for the day that’s been.
All that said, any time of the day is appropriate and it really depends on when you have the time and what fits with your own schedule. I’ve also been known to lie on the floor in the middle of the day just to get my bearings! πŸ™‚ There really are no rules but you will come to your own knowledge about what works best for you. The bottom line is, meditate whenever you want – but meditate! πŸ™‚

  2. Great post Gail.

I think many of us underestimate the true benefits of effective meditation. As i grow wiser im starting to have quiet sessions where i do alot of visualizations and affirmations which sets up my day. The more i do it the more control it affords me.

    Thanks for sharing!

    • Hi Dane. Thank you for reading and commenting on the post. I agree with your that as we grow wiser (and sometimes older although not always) we tend to look more inwardly and start considering the possibility of meditation. It’s great that you can make the link between taking the time to meditate and the control you feel you have over your life. Many of us feel out of control and therefore powerless, but this is not the case at all. If only we would listen to ourselves more, we’d become aware of just what amazing, creative, powerful beings we really are. Have a wonderful and insightful day. Gail

  3. Hi Gail,

What a great post! Beautiful website and a beautifully written post. I love how you explain the importance of taking time to spend alone so as you know what the right action to take is. So many people need to take action but are so stressed in life they end up doing nothing.

I have been meditating for more than 20 years now so I thoroughly recommend it. It makes you calm and you get to a stage where nothing can upset or disturb you. You accept life as it happens. And once you have that flow you seem to be shielded from lots of negative energy. Thanks for a great post,

    Kev

    • Hi Kevin. Thank you for reading my post and taking the time to comment. I’m really pleased that you have engaged in meditation and that you have been doing it for such a long time and seeing so many benefits. I really do think that if more people did it, the world would be a happier place. Luckily, at least in the UK at the moment, there is trend to teach things like mindfulness in schools now and it has been receiving some good press. Let’s hope it stays around a while. Thanks and have a great day. Gail

  4. Hi Gail,

I learned to Meditate to help create the life I have. Mediation, to Westerners anyways, seems a little cheesy. You will feel ‘awkward’ at first. You will feel ‘itches’ everywhere. Your mind with be clouded with rapid thoughts and images. Do not interfere with any of these sensations. By session 3/4 all this will be flattened and then you will start to feel PEACE. – BEAUTIFUL.

Also, Never Ever “””TRY””” TO MEDITATE! Do not try anything. You are to ‘be’. Only just ‘be’. Once you understand that – you will find that inside of you – is an infinite well of peace that was simply covered up by your own illusory thoughts of vengeance, self pity, thoughts of anger, thoughts of insecurities, thoughts – thoughts -thoughts – most of which are telling you some kind of unreal nightmare etc. They are not real – you are real. Do not confuse the two.

Ultimately, ‘I’ – which does not exist under blissful meditation nor does any noun – experienced the most amazing thing. I would like to ask you Gail what exactly this was please if you know.

I was meditating in my sitting room, tv off, home fire blazing and warmly crackling as I got comfy in my crossed legged position.

I did my deep breath routine and then just ‘began to be.

3:45 mins later I felt my mind ‘DROP’ lower through another level of relaxation. It further ‘SLIPPED’ as if temporarily falling into further relaxation. My body was falling asleep but my mind was spark away but super relaxed observing without ‘thought what was occurring.

All of a gentle sudden, I felt like a cap/lid was lifted from the top of my head.Behind my eyes I seen, and actually physically felt, a beautiful sparkling wave of gentle light gold flood into my head and went down my entire body in waves. When it hit my toes, the first wave waited there, and was awashed with the latter ones. After awhile, when it seemed to gather of all of ‘itself’ began the same process but upwards.
It reached my shoulders, but because I got scared and did not know what to do, I believe this energy stopped at my shoulders with intelligence behind it. It was beautiful what happened next.
Like rain drops – droplets of this amazing energy ‘dropped-upwards-in-a-fizzle-like-sensation’ until it was depleted.
I opened my eyes and my environment was super clear and every thing was heightened.
What was that GAil? I really do want to know as I have asked many and they don’t know.
Thank you and looking forward to your answer.

    Namaste my friends. Regards,
    Peaceful Philip.

    • Hi Philip.
Thank you for your comments on my site and for posing your question. The symptoms and experiences you describe sound very much like astral projection or what people call an out-of-body experience to me. I have been studying this for some time and although I have not yet written a post about it, there is a lot of information on the web which can help you.
Sorry that I have not got my article finished yet, but it will come.
Astral projection is where your body is asleep (as in sleep paralysis or just basically totally relaxed) but your consciousness is awake and can leave your body and travel in the astral planes. There are many planes of existence. The earth as we know it is a physical plane or reality – known as the 3rd dimension. The astral planes are in the 4th and 5th dimensions and your consciousness can travel in these planes without the need for a body- think of it as your mind using energy to travel and experience things, similar to a dream. The difference is that you are consciously ‘awake’ and therefore can direct your mind and experiences more easily. Some people experience lucid dreaming (I have done this) which is where your body is asleep but you are aware that you are dreaming and can direct and change your dreams.
I have experienced astral projection once but practice it regularly but I usually am so tired that I just fall asleep but I’m working on that one.
Astral projection is a totally natural phenomenon but most people have forgotten how to do it or cannot relax enough. It has been written about in many cultures over thousands of years including gnosticism, yoga, buddhism, new age to name but a few. Reiki helps you to master your energy so I’m not surprised if you undergo Reiki.
Sorry this is a short explanation – I will point you in the direction of these places to find out more if you wish.
