  1. Find a quiet space – Sit comfortably in a chair or on the floor. Close your eyes or keep them softly focused.
  2. Take deep breaths – Inhale deeply through your nose for four counts, hold for four counts, and exhale slowly through your mouth for four or eight counts.
  3. Focus on the present moment – Pay attention to your breath only, the feeling of air entering and leaving your nostrils, or the rise and fall of your chest.
  4. Acknowledge distractions – If your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to your breath without judgment. If thoughts persist, imagine hanging them on an old school coat peg for you to come back to later, and refocus on your breath.
