Introduction: What are crystals and why do people use them?

Crystals are natural minerals that take shape deep within the Earth, each with its own structure, colours, and unique energies. Across many spiritual traditions, crystals play a part in healing, meditation, and finding inner balance. My first encounter with crystals was inspired by friends who shared stories about certain stones making them feel calmer, more focused, or simply happier just to have nearby.

People track down crystals as simple tools for personal growth, well-being, and spiritual connection. Ancient cultures, like the Egyptians and Greeks, valued crystals for protection, vitality, and their use in meaningful rituals. These days, crystals frequently show up in modern spiritual circles to support meditation, energy work, and to help with setting intentions. Through my own experience, I’ve seen how bringing crystals into daily habits adds a touch of beauty and mindfulness, especially on tough or chaotic days.

Each crystal’s structure brings a certain ‘vibe’ of frequency, or so believers say. Clear quartz is famous for ramping up intentions, while amethyst is often favoured for calmness and clarity. Even for those with a more scientific or sceptical approach, simply handling or looking at crystals can offer a sense of grounding, a fascination for their tactile nature or a burst of creative inspiration. And while the energetic effects of crystals haven’t been ‘scientifically’ proven, many people find them meaningful and supportive as part of their personal rituals.

Why start with crystals? Practical benefits and what to expect

Getting into crystals is a personal choice, and many people notice subtle shifts when they make crystals part of their lives. You might feel more present during your meditations, spot changes in your mood, or just get a little extra boost from keeping a bright stone in your pocket or on your desk. Here are some ways that crystals can help:

  • Increased mindfulness: Touching or seeing a crystal may prompt you to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the present moment
  • Support for intentions: Setting an intention while holding a crystal gives a stronger sense of commitment, like having a physical anchor for the goals you want to achieve and amplifying your focus and energy
  • Gentle emotional support: Many people say crystals provide support through feelings of stress, anxiety, or low energy
  • Connection to spiritual practice: Crystals are a simple and meaningful way to bring ritual into daily life, whether during a meditation session or even just looking at them over a peaceful cup of tea

There’s truly no wrong way to use crystals. Some days, you may want to just appreciate their beauty. I have a friend who loves to carry a crystal and almost uses it like a fidget toy because she loves the tactile feel of its smoothness and shape. Other days, you may want to turn to the symbolism of crystals when dealing with tough situations and focus on their meanings, such as rose quartz (love and compassion). Building a relationship with your stones is part of the fun, letting you find your own rhythm and preferences. You will no doubt find that you are drawn to certain stones over and above others, and that’s part of their attraction.

Step-by-step guide: How to begin your crystal adventure

Jumping into the world of crystals can feel a bit overwhelming at first. I still remember my first visit to a crystal shop, there were SO many shapes, colours and sizes, it’s sometimes hard to know where to start. Here’s a straightforward, step-by-step approach that I recommend, which I hope will help many beginners feel right at home.

1. Choose your first crystal

With hundreds of crystal types to check out, some people (me included) let intuition guide them while others look up the traditional meanings and purposes or go with their birth stone. My first picks were clear quartz, amethyst, and rose quartz. They’re easy to track down, affordable, and versatile enough for just about any meditation or spiritual practice. I later bought some aquamarine, which is my birthstone.

  • Clear quartz: Linked to clarity, focus, and boosting energy
  • Amethyst: Used for rest, spiritual growth, and relaxation
  • Rose quartz: Connected to love, compassion, and nurturing self-acceptance
  • Aquamarine: Linked to calmness, clarity and communication

I advise listening to your gut when picking your starter stone(s). Hold different crystals in your hand (or browse photos online) and notice which ones you’re most drawn to as it makes the choice extra personal and meaningful.

2. Cleanse your crystal

Crystals are thought by many to soak up surrounding energies. Cleansing them, especially when you first get them, helps you start afresh with their original energy. I usually rinse some of my stones under gently flowing water, leave them on a windowsill for a night under the moon, or use incense smoke or burning sage. Others prefer burying their stones in salt or earth for a night.

CAUTIONS! Not all crystals do well in water!

  • Avoid water with: Selenite, malachite, lapis lazuli, and a few others—they don’t hold up well when wet.

Regular cleansing brings freshness back to your stones, whether you believe in the energetic side or simply want to keep them clean and special.

Tip: Some crystals may fade in direct sunlight (like amethyst), so if you’re charging them, opt for morning light or indirect sun.

3. Set your intention

Hold your crystal, take a few deep breaths, and focus on what you hope to call in. A powerful affirmation for crystals is to use the “I AM” affirmation to affirm what I’d like help with, maybe more calm, support, or clarity. This can be a powerful “I am calm” or “I am receiving clarity”. Other times, you can say a short affirmation, like, “I invite peace and presence with this stone.” Doing this gives your crystal a job, a personal meaning, and boosts your connection to it.

4. Find your method of use

There are many ways to use your crystals in your daily life. Here are a few easy ones:

  • Meditation: Hold the crystal in your hand, rest it on your body, or place it nearby as you meditate. This can really helps your focus and allow you to let go of mental chatter
  • Carrying or wearing: A small tumbled stone in your pocket, a pendant, or a bracelet acts as a reminder of your intention throughout the day
  • At home: Placing crystals on your desk, beside the bed, or around your meditation space adds a peaceful ambience and uplifting beauty to your environment
  • As a pendulum: Use your crystal on a chain or a string or a ribbon as a pendulum when you have questions you’d like a yes/no answer for

See what feels right for you. My usual setup includes a crystal next to my bed, one tucked in my bag (yes, I use it as a fidget toy too!), and a few in my meditation corner.

Safety note on using crystals with water – Some people may place crystals in drinking water (a trend in some circles), but certain stones can be toxic or leach minerals, so I do not advise this.

✅ Optional addition if you want to be thorough:

Note: Avoid placing crystals directly in drinking water unless you’ve researched them thoroughly—some can leach harmful substances.

Practical tips for using crystals in meditation and daily life

  • Start small: Begin with just one or two crystals at a time. It’ll be easier to spot what’s changing and keep things manageable
  • Keep a journal: Jot down your thoughts and feelings before and after using a crystal. This helps you notice changes, be they physical, emotional, or spiritual, and track what’s working best
  • Stay grounded: After using crystals, especially in deep meditation, drink water and connect with nature. Stand on the grass or go barefoot to bring yourself back down to earth
  • Respect your process: Each adventure is different, so what works for me might not work for you. Give yourself room to try out new stones and routines
  • Combine with other rituals: Pair crystals with breathwork, incense, or gentle music to give the experience a boost and deepen your practice

Popular crystals for beginners and their traditional meanings

  • Clear quartz: Nicknamed the “master healer,” often put to work for boosting intentions and the energies of other stones.
  • Amethyst: Seen as a stone of peace and protection, supporting spiritual growth and relaxation.
  • Rose quartz: All about love and softness. Many people use it for self-care or relationship support.
  • Black tourmaline: Believed to shield against negative energy and reinforce grounding.
  • Citrine: Linked to confidence, joy, and creative spark.
  • Selenite: Valued for mental clarity and cleansing other crystals.
  • Smoky quartz: Good for letting go of stress and supporting steady focus.

Everyone’s experience is personal. Having a handful of basics gives you plenty to experiment with at the start.

Thinking of buying a crystal set?

If you’re just starting out, you might feel a bit overwhelmed by all the options. That’s where starter crystal sets can be a lovely introduction. These sets usually contain a small collection of popular stones that are known for their supportive and versatile properties, perfect for beginners who want to explore crystals without overthinking it.

Most basic crystal sets include stones like:

  • Amethyst – for calm and emotional balance
  • Clear Quartz – to amplify intentions
  • Rose Quartz – to encourage self-love and compassion
  • Citrine – to boost confidence and joy
  • Black Tourmaline – for grounding and protection
  • Selenite or Smoky Quartz – for cleansing and clarity

Some sets also come with a small guidebook or information card explaining each crystal’s traditional meaning, along with a pouch to carry them in.

Tips for choosing a crystal set:

  • Look for ethically sourced crystals where possible
  • Choose sets with genuine stones, not plastic imitations (avoid terms like “man-made quartz” unless you’re aware it’s lab-grown)
  • Don’t worry too much about “getting it right” – trust that the stones you’re drawn to are the ones you need

A crystal set can make a beautiful gift – for yourself or someone else – and it’s a simple way to begin building a connection with the energies and symbolism of each stone. You don’t need a huge collection to begin – just a few thoughtful pieces and an open heart.

  1. I love crystals. I also remember checking out Gaia but I do not remember why I googled it. I probably just came across the website as I searched random websites about crystals. I am not an expert on crystals and their properties but I do collect them for their beauty and potential healing properties. All of the crystals I have collected are rather small. They are all about one inch to three inches in size. I put them on a small altar with Buddha and Shiva Nataraja. i am a rather calm person, very slow to anger but can this be a result from my collection of crystals? Do crystals have to be of a sufficient size to really help or influence us emotionally or spiritually?

I have never thought of cleaning my crystals with water. I usually just wipe them off with a cloth I keep for that purpose. I do cleanse the air around my small altar with sage quite often. I have never thought about buying a crystal kit because I did not realize they exist. I just may have to get one. I do have plenty of amethyst, clear crystals, rose quartz, and smoky quartz. A crystal kit would introduce me to crystals I never thought to purchase. Well thank you for this article. I am going to research about crystal sets now. MAC.

    • Hi there. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment. I’m so pleased to hear that you like crystals and it’s fine just to start of with small ones. Most of the ones I have a quite small but that makes them easy to carry around. Crystals can help you to align your energy and frequency so they don’t have to be huge for your to tune in. A small radio set is just as helpful as a larger one if you know what to tune in to.

I’m glad you picked up some tips about crystal sets and cleansing too. I like using sage as well. All the best with your crystal journey and I hope it brings you peace and luck. Gail

  2. What a beautifully thorough and welcoming guide for anyone curious about using crystals! I really enjoyed how this post blends both the practical steps and the spiritual “why” behind crystal work. As someone who’s just beginning to explore this world, I found the beginner tips super approachable—especially the part about choosing crystals intuitively. I also loved the reminder that there’s no “wrong” way to work with them. The descriptions of amethyst, rose quartz, and citrine really resonated with me—I might have to start with those! Do you have a favorite crystal that’s been especially meaningful on your journey? I also appreciated the safety tips and how you emphasized personal connection over rigid rules. This whole post feels like sitting down with a knowledgeable friend who wants to help you connect more deeply with yourself. Thank you for creating something so grounded, warm, and accessible. I’m excited to start my own crystal practice now!

    • Hi Christine. Thank you so much for your very kind comments about the article. I’m so pleased that you found it useful and I love the references to “sitting down with a knowledgeable friend”. That is certainly my aim in writing these articles or any articles on my site. I’m also pleased that you found the article practical and I always advocate following your intuition on any subject, because to me, this is listening to the callings of your Higher Self.

To answer your question, I really like carnelian which is sometimes called the ‘sunset stone’ because of its orangey red colouring. I find I’m just drawn to this colour a lot in my life. It supports energy and creativity which I would like to think are two qualities I have.
