The Law of Attraction FAQs

Many people have questions about the law of attraction, what it is and how it works, and they are looking for simple, short answers, so I have put together a few FAQs and corresponding answers which I hope will help.

You can also find more detailed information in the links to longer posts.

If you have something specific you would like to know that I have not covered here, please also feel free ask your question in the comments below.

What is the law of attraction?

The law of attraction is a universal law of the universe. It helps us to understand how things within the universe work and how our thoughts and feelings help ‘create our own reality’. We understand that we all stay attached to the planet and don’t float off into space, because we understand gravity. We understand Newton’s law’s of motion which allow us to measure forces, momentum and use physics to construct things such as buildings, planes and cars. You can think of the law of attraction as being similar although it is concerned with how energy (of which we are all made up), consciousness, thoughts and focus, are linked, and how they affect what we manifest in the world.

Very simply put, the law of attraction states that “like energy attracts like energy.’ So if you are focused on positive things, you will attract more positive things. If your focus is on more negative emotions such as helplessness or hate, you will attract more of these energies into your life.

What’s great about the law of attraction is that you don’t need to know how it works, you just need to accept that it does.

Think big: imagination and the law of attraction

Isn’t that just ‘positive thinking mumbo-jumbo?’

Thinking positively is definitely a tool you can use to help change your life using the law of attraction, and yes, thinking positively really does bring more benefits than thinking more negatively.

However, the law of attraction is more than that. It is about feelings and vibrations more than just simple saying positive words or repeating affirmations.

This means that it is not just what you saythat is important, but how the things you say really make you feel, because this will affect the frequency of the vibrational energy you effectively ’emit’. Anyone can say positive things to themselves but if they do not really believe what they say, then their vibrational energy will not change, and worse still, their ‘positive’ words could lead to them feeling even more negative as they force themselves to say things they don’t really believe.

For example, if you feel that you don’t have enough money, but simply repeat every day, “I am rich, I am rich”, then you would be unlikely to attract more money. This is simply because to you, the words “I am rich” in themselves, don’t make you feel rich or wealthy – instead, they remind you that in your current situation, you feel that don’t have enough money which is why you are repeating your affirmations in the first place!

So your energetic vibration in repeating those words is not one which attracts abundance and prosperity, but simply reaffirms your original problem.

Thoughts are important, yes, but it is the feeling of what you want that is more important because this is what the universe responds to. This is the only thing the universe can respond to since the universe is made of energy and responds in energetic vibrations, not in words.

What is positive thinking about?

Gratitude and the law of attraction

What does ‘create your own reality’ mean? Surely we are all living in the same ‘reality’!

We might all be living on earth, but we are all living in very different ‘realities’. The ‘reality’ that each person is living in is governed by their own, unique perspective, their values and beliefs, and their experiences. For example, two people could live on the same street, in the same town, having had the same education, yet they could have very different views of the world, and therefore, very different experiences.

One person might look around them as see the beauty in the trees and the people they know. They could look out for positive things, and find them. Consequently, their ‘reality’ is one where things are beautiful, beneficial and fulfilling. The other person could have the complete opposite view, and see only deprivation and lack. To this person, their ‘reality’ is one of struggle and pain.

Technically both are living in the ‘same world’ but it is their perspective and focus that affects the way they interpret it.

Think of a spider or insect. To some people, these represent fear, phobias and negative experiences; and to others, they are a source of wonder and amazement. The spider is just a spider. It is neither positive nor negative. It is the person’s perception of the spider which creates the ‘reality’ of the experience the person has when they come face to face with it!

Who invented the law of attraction?

The law of attraction was not ‘invented’ by anyone. It is a universal law which allows energies to align for the purpose of expanding universal consciousness. It facilitates the creation of new experiences based on what is desired. It is about “deliberate creation” as Esther Hicks would say. This means creating your life experiences in response to your conscious desires, as opposed to just letting life happen to you, and having little say about what comes along.

It’s a bit like the difference that being the driver of the car makes, instead of being a passenger. The driver can consciously direct the car in any direction they want to go, but the passenger just has to sit back and accept the destination because they are not in control of the car. .

The law of attraction has always been, and will always be with us. It has no human inventor.

However, many people over the centuries have understood the law of attraction, and have tried to pass that knowledge on to others so that they could become more conscious creators themselves.

Many ‘organised religions’ understand this at a fundamental level, but you often have to take out the historical politics, power-struggles and ‘human ego’ elements from many religions, before you can find the basic law of attraction teachings in their doctrines.

More recently, a number of different people have written books and made films, documentaries and YouTube videos explaining it. These include:

  • Esther and Jerry Hicks in the Abraham teachings
  • Barbara Marciniak
  • Erkart Tolle
  • Neale Donald Walsch
  • Rhonda Byrne

Many religions get their inspirations and rules from a holy book such as the bible or the Koran. Does the law of attraction have a holy scripture?

As per the last answer, the law of attraction is not an organised religion, so there is no ‘holy book’. What is important to believers in the law of attraction, is the individual relationship each person has with themselves and with source energy (some people call this, God).

However, there are many influential books that have been written about the law of attraction.

Some of the most popular ones are:

  • Ask and it is Given: Jerry and Esther Hicks
  • The Secret: Rhonda Byrne.
  • The Power Of Intention: Dr. Wayne Dyer
  • Conversations with God: Neale Donald Walsch
  • The Secret Law of Attraction: Master the Power of Intention: Katherine Hurst
  • The Mastger Key System: Charles F Haanel
  • Think and Grow Rich: Napoleon Hill

Does the law of attraction work for everyone?

Yes. The law of attraction is a universal law that works for everyone, large and small, big or tall, male or female. In fact, it works for ALL consciousness, from the smallest cell to the largest manifestation. Some might also say that it is the process behind evolution.

Does the law of attraction work even if I don’t believe it?

Yes. You cannot ‘opt out’ of the law of attraction in the same way that you cannot opt out of gravity and choose to float off the planet instead. It works whether you believe it or not and whether you are conscious of it or not.

In fact, many humans are not consciously creating their life at all, but instead are like the passenger in the car, just putting up with whatever life throws them. What they fail to understand is that their experiences are still based on their fundamental ‘output’ of emotions, thinking and frequency – because the law of attraction states that ‘like attracts like!’

Can I use the law of attraction to bring me more money?

Absolutely. You need to focus your attention on feelings of wealth and abundance to attract more money. The problem that many people have is that when they think about money, their emotional state becomes negative, rather than positive because of their past experiences and thoughts. The trick is to consciously change your thoughts, and subsequently, your emotional state, to reflect a different vibration – one that is based on feeling abundant, so more abundance will come.

What is an abundance mentality?

If you believe in the law of attraction, do you believe in life after death?

Everyone, everywhere is always free to believe what they want about the world. There is no ‘law of attraction doctrine’ anywhere which tells anyone what to believe.

However one of the fundamental premises about the universe, related to the law of attraction, is that we are all energetic beings which cannot die since energy cannot be destroyed. Therefore, there is a spiritual element to living that is understood by many people who consciously use the law of attraction. This is an understanding that we are all spiritual beings who have chosen to come to earth and experience its time-space reality for the purpose or consciously creating new experiences. And whilst our bodies may wither and die, fundamentally, our energy will continue forever, albeit not necessarily in human form.

Can I use the law of attraction to find a partner?

Yes. Although in the same way as money; in order to attract a loving partner, you need to focus on the feelings of love, compassion and support, rather than feeling lonely or sad because you haven’t yet found someone.

How to be the change you want to see

Can I use the law of attraction to heal myself?

Yes. The natural state of being for everyone is one of wellness and health. By focusing on these feelings, instead of on any particular disease or illness, you can bring about healing into any area of your life. One of the greatest advocates of the law of attraction and healing is Louise Hay and her book You Can Heal Your Life.

What is the language of the universe?

Does the law of attraction work for ‘bad’ or ‘negative’ people too?

The universe has no judgment. It does not consider things to be ‘good’ or ‘bad’ like many humans do. The law of attraction works for all, in the same way that gravity does.

It is only us, as humans with human perspectives and human thinking that judge things to be ‘good’ or ‘bad’. The universe simply responds in energy, not in judgment.

If you offer a certain vibrational energy to the universe, (whether you consider it to be ‘good’ or ‘bad’) the universe will simply respond in kind and send you more of the same. There is no judgment at all, so yes, the law of attraction works for everyone. It is only you who are judging these people as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ based on your own values, beliefs, education and experiences.

I’ve heard some people say I can “have be, or do anything I want” – obviously I have human limitations so this doesn’t make sense to me.

Ultimately, the law of attraction states that we are ‘limitless’ beings, restricted only by our imagination. If you think about it, that has to be the case if you accept the principle that your thoughts are creative. So yes, you can ‘have, be, or do anything you want.

However, what this doesn’t always take into account is the human conditioning we are all brought up with and the human social experiences we all have, where we often grown up being told the opposite of this. We then look around for confirmation of our thoughts and see many other people who have limited themselves, so we accept this as our ‘reality’.

The truth is, however, that we really do have the potential to be anything we want although many people have certainly forgotten this.

How long does it take for the things I want to manifest in my life?

The answer to this question depends on how strong and how committed your focus is. Some things in your life can be manifested almost immediately if you have the right mindset and belief system. Others need to allow you to build some momentum first.

Interestingly, this is not to do with how the law of attraction works, but it is to do with how much social conditioning you have absorbed. It is as easy to manifest 1p as it is to manifest £1 million. However, most people don’t believe that, so for them, their reality is that it is difficult to manifest any money at all. They have to change their beiliefs and thoughts about money first, then it is easy!

How to live in the now moment

Do I need to use affirmations or a vision board?

Vision boards and affirmations are great ways to help you with your law of attraction practices. They work best if they put you in a positive frame of mind and can help you raise your vibration though thinking about positive things. Remember though that it is the feeling that is important so choose things for your vision board that make you feel good.

Can I follow a religion and still believe in the law of attraction?

Yes you are free to believe whatever you want about whatever you want. All true advocates of the law of attraction will defind your right and freedom as an individual to follow your own path and choose what you desire most. Many followers of the law of attraction also subscribe to some kind of spiritual belief – many also, do not. That’s the great thing about freedom of choice.

As one teacher put it “you are so free, you can choose bondgage if you want to.’

Is this just something that ‘new agers’ have made up?

No one ‘made this up’. It is a fundamental universal law. However, in recent years, the law of attraction has become more widely talked about in the media due to the publication of some influential books and films but the law of attraction is timeless and does not belong to any one religion or philosophical group.

Who else believes in the law of attraction?

There are many, many people who follow the principles of the law of attraction and consciously create their own lives and experiences every day.

Some of the more famous advocates include:

  • Oprah Winfrey
  • Tony Robbins
  • Jim Carrey
  • Will Smith
  • Denzel Washington
  • Bob Proctor
  • Beyonce
  • Jack Canfield
  • Lady Ga-Ga
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger
  • Eckhart Tolle
  • Wayne Dyer

  1. I have never read an explanation of the law of attraction before; I just assumed that it is all about attracting a partner. Since I am not looking for a partner, I always pass over the subject thinking that it doesn’t apply to me. Now I have a much better understanding and I can see how it applies to everyone in many different situations. I’m glad that you clarified the difference between positive affirmations and the importance of feeling positive.

    • Hi Theresa. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. The law of attraction is always working – on every subject and every level – even the cellular level responds to the law of attraction since it is how we expand and evolve. The more you read and understand, the easier it will be for you to become a more conscious creator of your own experience. All the best in your search and feel free to come back with more questions. Gail

  2. I’m so glad I came across your site and definitely bookmarking this site to continue reading on the law of attraction. I’ve been a negative person the majority of my life and unfortunately still am at times. You’ve given me some short and sweet answers in this article and plan on reading more about creating my own reality. Thank you.

    • Hi Jason. I hope you find more answers as you read more on the site. Feel free to leave more comments or ask more questions and I’ll be happy to help. But I suspect that I will not be the only one helping you now….once you set yourself on the path to discovering who you truly are, you will find more and more things that seem to just ‘pop up’ when you least expect them. And that is the law of attraction in motion.

  3. Hi Gail. This is great. Thanks for sharing more information on the law of attraction. It is something that I strongly believe in and try to remind myself of constantly. Becoming a conscious creator is a journey away from everything we are taught throughout the school system and through the conditioning we absorb from society in general. It’s a process that is up to us depending on how much time and emotion we invest in our own personal development. Thanks for all of the useful links you have provided to other information that will help me obtain my goals.
    Kind regards.

    • Hi Andrew. Thank you for your kind comments and I’m glad you found useful. The law of attraction is how the universe works, whether people believe in it or not. It’s just a matter of allowing ourselves to become the co-creators that we truly are and having faith, even if the ‘established wisdom’ prefers not to listen. All the best. Gail

  5. Hi Gail, just wanted to say what a great post this is. You’re so right when you say you’ve really got to feel it to believe it. Once you start thinking positive it affects everyone around you. I’m going to work my way through your other posts too. Thanks for the motivation.

    • Dear Linda. Many thanks for your kind comments and I’m so pleased you like the article. There is a lot that has been written about the law of attraction, and much of it can confuse people if they don’t fully understand the underlying basis of it. Feelings, vibration and energy is everything. Get that, and you get the lot – literally! Wishing you every success. Gail
